H6603 -- Information Storage & Retrieval (Core Course)
Lecturers

Associate Professor: Foo Shou Boon, Schubert
Dr. Liew Chern Li, Avrel

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the storage, organisation, and retrieval of information, particularly textual information. The emphasis is on the design and use of textual and bibliographic databases, the subject approach to information, and database search and retrieval skills. Students will acquire knowledge of the design issues of bibliographic databases plus the search and retrieval techniques available in various information retrieval systems including online databases as well as Web search engines and subject guides. The subject and the technical issues are treated generically in a manner suited to all information workers who need to organise and access information using in-house and/or remote databases.

Course Objectives
  • understand the generic nature of information storage and retrieval systems;
  • understand the basic design and structure of textual and bibliographic databases;
  • develop an idea of the various ways and means of organising information in a text retrieval environment;
  • understand the basic concepts of Boolean and non-Boolean retrieval models;
  • understand and use information retrieval systems organised differently by different text retrieval systems, online databases, Web search engines, and so on;
  • apply natural language, controlled vocabulary and classification techniques at a basic level.
