H6671 -- Database Management Systems

Course Description

This course covers database design and management with an emphasis on developing applications for information services. Students will learn the main database models, data modelling and database design. Students will have hands-on experience developing an application using a selected database management system software and a Web database development tool.

Labs sessions will focus on developing Web database applications. Software used in the labs sessions includes Microsoft Access and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students are expected to:
  • understand the concepts, objectives and principles of database design and management;
  • understand the main database models, and the principles of the relational model;
  • apply the principles of data modelling and database design to develop a database application to support an information service;
  • use a general-purpose Database Management System software to implement a working database application;
  • use Structured Query Language and Query-By Example to extract information from a relational database;
  • understand the technology enabling Web access to databases.
